Arguably the most iconic of BMX icons, Mat has unequivocally shaped the sport we all love, whether it be the lifestyles we lead, the tricks we do, or the bikes we ride.
Hoffman Bikes is another of the handful of bike companies that have been launched by ex-Haro pro riders during a heyday of BS comps, rider-run magazine launches and VHS videos that were treated like gold-dust; for HB started out during one of the most vibrant of times in BMX - the early '90s. Hoffman was born from the same warehouse that was home to a veritable vert experiment lab, Mat's own halfpipe.
Hoffman Bikes Founded: 1991 Owners: Mat Hoffman & Co Based: Oklahoma City, OK Manufactures: Frames, forks, stems, grips, bar plugs, seats, seat-clamps, sprockets, pedals, pegs, rims, front hubs, rear hubs, wheel-sets, tires, complete bikes, leather jackets. Team: Anthony Napolitan, Art Thomason, Brad Simms, Jeremie Infelise, Jeremy Hrabal, Kevin Jones, Kevin Robinson, Mark Potoczny, Matt Wilhelm, Nick Kirkland, Seth Kimborough, Shane Weston, Will Love, Zack Warden, Ben Hennon, Jon Taylor, Kazuo Okada, Patrick Rohn, Bas Keep, Zack Williams and some bloke called Mat Hoffman. 'With my name on the down tube, I made it a personal commitment to be a control freak about every facet of Hoffman Bikes.'
Mat Hoffman From the early handbuilt Condor frames, through the Taj signature frames, the Big Daddies and Deebos, to developments such as clamp-on stems and multi-piece handlebars, Hoffman have come a long way. They started out with a limited line of US-built frames in '92 and went mass-production three years later with the complete bike designed for newbies, the Egg. Using this as a platform, Hoffman Bikes stepped up and have expanded the range ever since, adding different styles of bikes and at varying price-points, providing something for everyone. Interestingly though, while some brands have added more and more bikes this year, Hoffman have deliberately slimmed back a little and refined a more focused 2010 range. It's an innovative step in an age of more is more, and bigger is conceivably better.
So we spoke to Mark Owen at Hoffman and got the low-down on operations there. How long have you guys been making complete bikes for? Hoffman Bikes has offered complete bikes since 1992.

Originally, they were a build made with USA-constructed Condor frame and fork sets. Around 1995, we offered the first pre-assembled bike from Taiwan.
Do you still have any of the original range still around your office? We have parts here and there. I have one of the first Condor frames in my office, very nice. What are your thoughts about those old original bikes, now?
Wow - it is crazy to reflect on the original complete bikes. The first few years were cutting edge.
The complete bike specification then challenged the other brands to step up their complete bike specification. So when it comes to your completes, who does what at your company? I handle the Hoffman Bikes line. I have been the product manager for Hoffman Bikes since mid 1997. Before that I worked in the HB machine shop doing everything from cutting tubes to welding frames.
Does the team get involved along the way? Yes, the team is involved in various aspects of the Hoffman Bikes product line. And how many bikes have you got in your range this year?
The 2010 product year has five models within our Condor and Scarab completes. The Scarab is offered in an 18' complete bike and three different component packages, EL, IL and AL. Do you have more or less bikes compared to 2009? We have fewer bikes this year, the 2010 line evolved to compensate the shift in the market.
Feedback from our dealers revealed that the ever-growing complete bike lines from all brands were getting too cumbersome. So, we listened and offered. I can say that dealers love it. Our product is easy to manage and understand.
This simplified line also translates well to consumers. Can you run us through your range, starting out at the base through to the pricier stuff?
The Condor has a suggested retail of $269.99 - a great bike for those young riders that are interested in freestyle but may not need all the higher end parts. The Scarab 18' is at $309.99. Hoffman Bikes was one of the first to offer an 18' size freestyle complete bike, and it has evolved into an awesome bike for riders that are just not ready for a 20' bike. The Scarab 18' offers the same great look and feel of a 20' complete bike but it is just easier to handle. Then there's the Scarab EL - the EL series is comprised of complete bikes that meet the needs of the aspiring BMX rider seeking an entry-level price tag. The EL series is built around HB's team-designed frames, featuring an integrated headtube and mid BB. Added to the mix are 8' rise HB handlebars, a compact 25/9 drive-train with fully-sealed cassette hub and 3-piece chromo tubular cranks with sealed BB.

Quite simply, the EL series is more bang for your buck. Next, at $439.99, the Scarab IL. The IL complete bike is a great bike for the more experienced rider seeking a quality upgrade minus the steep price tag. The IL series features main frame cromo tubing, 100% chromo HB forks, 8' rise HB handlebars, compact 25/9 drive-train with fully sealed cassette hub, Alienation rims, HB Skidmark 20'×1.95' and Innova 20'×2.25' tires, 3-piece chromo tubular cranks, sealed mid BB and HB's new Pivotal Mesh seat and Pivotal seat post. The IL range is a sure-fire way to help bring out a rider's 'pro'tential. Finally, the Scarab AL, at $529.99. The AL complete bike range is great for riders seeking a pro-level bike minus the pro-level price tag.
Built around a Hoffman Bikes team-designed 100% chromo frame with integrated head tube and mid BB, the AL series features 100% chromo HB forks, 8' rise HB handlebars, compact 25/9 drive-train with fully sealed cassette hub, Alienation rims, HB Skidmark 20'×1.95' and Innova 20'×2.25' tires, 3-piece chromo tubular cranks, HB FL stem and HB's new Pivotal Mesh print seat and Pivotal seatpost. From the ground up, the AL series is designed to withstand the demands of modern day BMX riding. It takes a long time search for quality products at good price points to allow you to offer them at the right retails.Mark Owen/Hoffman Which single bike took the longest to figure out?
Both the Condor and the Scarab EL took the longest. It takes a long time search for quality products at good price points to allow you to offer them at the right retails. Which was the toughest detail this year? The sealed rear cassette hub on the EL complete bike was the toughest detail for sure. I had to do a lot of negotiating to be able to offer the sealed cassette hub on the EL in order to keep the retail at $369.99. Which is your favorite bike, which one are you most proud of? The Scarab EL flat metal is my favorite with great colorways and specs.
The matching color grips and rims really make the bike stand out. When did you start working this year's range - how long does it take? We started the 2010 range in November 2008. Depending on design changes and specifications it can take up to six months to develop a line. Which of the whole line would you ride straight out of the box? There is no question it would be the Scarab AL because I started riding in 1987, so anything less than the AL spec would not be suitable. It is very important to buy the product that meets or exceeds your personal skill level of riding.
Have you got anything else in there - fixies? At the moment, we are sticking with BMX freestyle. Other brands are offering other bikes, like fixies, cruisers etc., but we really want to focus on BMX Freestyle.
Have you already started work on next year's 2011 bikes? Anything you can tell us about those yet?
I am in full swing with the 2011 product range - I'm getting ready to head to Taiwan to start working out pricing new specs for the upcoming line. Hoffman Bikes 2010PY Product Showcase from Hoffman Bikes on Vimeo.
Finally, what about bikes coming from other companies which other complete bike ranges do you rate? Which one would you ride yourself? There are a lot of complete bikes on the market. Every company has its good points and weak points. I can say that there are a lot of great bikes out there, which is great for the end user, but I would have to say that HB offers the best price for the spec.
